Marrakesh Medina (a birds eye tour)

Posted in TRAVEL with tags , on April 20, 2009 by MOUSUMI DUTTA

Hello Darlings, All good things must come to an end & so after much idling on our Beach escapade, we are moving onto Essaouira’s famous neighbour who would be well known Marrakesh. We’re still travelling Budget style, so are taking the Supratours Bus to get to our destination. Now, don’t get twitchy  about public transport…its a Luxury Bus, no stops along the way, airconditioned, large windows, Free views.. And my, what a View

Desert plus greenery growing side by side. This must be what they call an Oasis. Imagine waking up to this each day…could take an easy 10 yrs off minus the Botox, don’t you agree ?

Oh no… Calamity…this just happened…

Our Bus hit this Car! Wonder what the driver was thinking of…either he was also mesmerized by the view or possibly thinking of his several wives (ahem). Can’t photograph the police here in their regal French Colonial inspired attire but you go ahead & imagine all that.

Finally arrived at destination Marrakesh & this really is a Peach City.

Look at the color of those walls & so many exciting things to see in the alleys of the Medina. Idlers just like us, loitering around…

Place Jemma el Fna has to be the Center of the Marrakesh Universe ! During the day its an enchanting square filled with snake charmers, fortune tellers, henna artists, fortune tellers to demystify your life, sooth sayers to calm jangled nerves & a shoppers paradise for those with money no object lifestyle.

At night its transformed into a diners paradise, complete with food stalls, tables & benches, dine under the stars…gastronomic extravaganza. A Street Food hallmark if you will.

The maze of the Medina surrounds this square, people watching haven, the Minaret of the koutoubia mosque towering above. Sip a Mint Tea, watch the world go by as you tune into the beat of the “Call to Prayer” from a nearby Mosque or the faint songs of Cheb Khaled singing “Aisha” from a CD.

The aroma of the Spice souk in triangular mounds of color…turmeric, cumin, coriander, fenugreek, dates & oh my the colors – saffron, pistachio, mustard…what a tonic for the soul…You know its about time those computer tecchies invented a SMELL funtion for moments like this, don’t you agree ?

Slipper souk displays of footwear to satisfy any desires should you decide to become a Genie anytime soon & in these economic times, need to keep all options open you know.

And should you decide to join a harem or fall victim to a Native Idler of sort…outfits to satiate the eyes of any Arabian Knight or possibly an Arabian Fly by Night.

As they say, when in Marrakesh…do as the locals do…sip Mint Tea, watch the sunset, make a toast / Hamdullilah to your health & Inshallah that this trip continues with more postcards to come. Au revoir darlings.

Travel Connections (to have & to hold)

Posted in TRAVEL with tags on April 12, 2009 by MOUSUMI DUTTA

Darlings, Life is so blissful when we’re on the road roaming from 1 location to another but what I love most is checking into an Internet Cafe to write & send e-mails from those remote locations. Bravely, I went ahead & sent an inquiry to a certain on-line Travel Editor…could she take a peek at my postcards ? Was it all too frivolous, too amateur, a waste of Internet usage ?

A response arrived…Yes, the lady had taken a peek & liked what she saw…the message went on to inquire if I could do a posting / link onto my postcards being that 217 people had seen my postcards in some shape or form. Why, ofcourse… I sat there wondering where infact the on-line Editor worked…was it a Rustic Home Office in a highland location  ?

Maybe the Edior sat outside & edited articles on an outside Porch like this…

Or perhaps it was a Highrise Glass & Steel structured office overlooking an amzing marina

Or better yet…maybe the Editor lived in a mobile Floating home & stopped at ports along the way…after all a Travel Editor had to travel & in these economic times, might have had to forego the Private Jet…

Maybe this is how the Editor picked up food supplies

Whatever it was… the Travel Agent days had now been replaced by a Travellers Union banding together to form…WWW.DIVERSETRAVELLER.COM

Travel related info from Diverse locations with Diverse followers…queries, forums, books, recipes, private jet rental, you name it…need a quick response while on the road…this is the site…Twitter or Facebook away & Darlings…now its my turn to log on myself to plan our next move…so until next week…Au revoir…

Idler’s Paradise

Posted in TRAVEL with tags on April 5, 2009 by MOUSUMI DUTTA

Darlings,  How time flies ! …Its been a month since I’ve been sending you these postcards & I have to share a little tit bit gossip with you…I’m so EXCITED… believe it or not, I have had 213 viewers for these postcards to date.  Can you believe it …213 !  They say 2’s a company & 3’s a crowd, so 213 must mean entourage…aw pish with the modesty…I had to share that small talk with you.  Ahem, this must mean that idling aimlessly has struck your fancy & I’m so beside myself…so lets continue.

You know since we arrived at this beach city of Essaouira, essaouira we got so sidetracked with you know, useless stuff like browsing for robes  & streetside cafes & lets not forget..Mc Donalds Mc Arabia that I never even took you around to see what the hoopla about this place was. So, the city is  surrounded by these ramparts  & cannons

yes those are real cannons meant to keep out enemies…Outside the ramparts lie Ocean Atlantic with its peacock blue water…

and the air is filled with cries of seagulls and waves hitting against the caramel colored sandy shore, the odour of  fig , pistachio and dates permeating  the senses…

idling by the ocean  & ramparts not your thing,  have no fear

the winding alleys are filled with shops crammed with enough treasures for you to pirate away for perhaps a store of your own.

Don’t all these striped fabrics made of cactus silk & cotton leave you craving for some color therapy to cure away any woes that might have befallen you – the perfect elixir I might say. Then there’s a medley of carpets

and for the Diva in all of us…shoes galore.

Isnt this a great way to display shoes…curtain style instead of on a shoe rack. You know I’m thinking that this could be the next home decor trend…isn’t this how those stylists get their ideas…as seen on location type thing ?

Oh…oh …look at this darling Tea shop

… I so want my kitchen to look like this.  Ethnic chic not your thing…there’s those fancy Designer  shops also…

but did you notice something…its that Blue color that I keep seeing everywhere…hmm but thats something for us to explore next…we’re also leaving this place soon, so may as well get one of those Designer bags. Until then, Chin Chin Darlings.  Its been infectous for you & ME… Au revoir.
